The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free

Holy summer cold Batman! I've never had one before and it is the WORST. It is just unnatural to be dressed in long pants and a black shirt, delirious, red eyes, shivering with pale face while everyone else is sweating. I was starting to search for bite marks.
And when I called in sick after a 4 day weekend who believed me? Nobody, that's who.
Anyways, these biatch has been hanging around for five days with no signs of scramming.

I'm going away to a cottage the week after next and I need a good beach read. Something middle of the road, fun but not dumb, thought but not headache-provoking, somewhere between Danielle Steele and Soren Kierkegaard. Any suggestions?

Have you read Water for Elephants? I read it on Spring Break and enjoyed. Some sex. Some drama. No real scary tension. Of course Janet Evanovich just came out with #13 - but those are definitely on the Danielle Steele intelligence level!

Hope you feel better and enjoy, enjoy!

Pride and Prejudice? Always a good read for me. And have you tried the usual home remedies for your horrible cold? Swear, for me hot honey and lemon, then chicken soup help, as does Alka Seltzer Plus - doesn't make the head wonky either - and a little nose spray to clear up that part...not all home remedies, but good nonetheless. Do get well soon.

My favourite is Marian Keyes. Start with Rachel's Story and go from there.

Too funny... I was also going to recommend Water for Elephants. I just finished it last night.

What about Eat, Pray, Love? That was a good one... a fun read. And it has a whole section on India? What's not to like?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I actually did read Water for Elephants a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Someone bought it for me, I didn't know it was so popular! I'll do a visit to Chapters and check out a few of those other titles.

This is slightly out of the ordinary but I've recently read Black Swan Green by David Mitchell. Loved it.

hmmm ... this is kinda tough cause I usually don't do middle road. Have you read The Alchemist? It's a nice light read. I just finished Johnny Got His Gun but that's a little hardcore for cottage reading.

Crush a some garlic and honey. Always works for me but bewarned, this stuff is near radioactive.

I just read Cormac McCarthy's The Road. I couldn't put it down but it is some seriously weird shit. People eating babies and things like that.

Another REALLY WEIRD but GREAT book is Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Or anything by Jennifer Egan.

I have Jodi Picoult's Nineteen Minutes for my vacation.

I think there is some sort of theme in my recent reads but I am not self-aware enough to see what it is...

I kinda like the book I'm reading now - The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death by Laurie Notaro. I'm not so sure it's middle of the road but it's pretty funny stuff - I'm thinking about checking out some of her other books too.
